The Parcel Desk
Each week we take one real parcel from a public listing site and run it through the same Off-Grid Score you can run yourself. Most weeks it is the cheapest listing we can find in a state that scores 80 or more: a buyer's find, with the catch written down beside it. Now and then it is the other kind, a pricey listing sold as an off-grid paradise that scores low. Every entry gives the score, the asking price, three findings from government data, the one thing to check first, and what that data cannot tell you. We read the listing; we do not visit the land.

Yes, this one holds up. Water is the strongest part of the score, the ground is flat, and the season is long. The catch is underfoot and out front: the soil stays wet, which means a pricier septic system, and the nearest road on the Census Bureau's map is about a mile from the listing's pin.
